I love Lenses .... i mean i am obsessed with them, but i also like weird stuff, so naturally i mixed the two and wanted to experiment. Why just focusing on the ultra expensive electronic lenses when you can do incredible things with just old glass ...
the glass is the key to image beauty, not the internal motors.
I am happy to announce the launch of a new web-serie about lens test " The Weird Lens Challenge "... but not any kind of lens, we will focus only on the weird ones , the old, the crazy ones that you can mount on a mirrorless camera.
For this episode we will teste a 1880 large format camera lens, one of the first lens with internal iris
After mounting it with some cardboard pieces to keep it tightly blocked in a m42 macro tube, and then screw it on different macro m42 tubes and to a m42 helicoidal ring that was screwed to a M42 to Nex Adaptor ring then to the Sony A7II , the lens was able to focus.
The Lens is incredibly sharp for a 136 years old simple metallic lens, from my test it's even sharper than most of my modern canon lenses, the results are amazing ... but it also gives some strange lens flares and light leaks that are pretty dreamy ( some would say it's horrible )

So does it takes good photos too ?

Previously on the " The Weird Lens Challenge " we saw how to shoot with a 180° fish eye from the end of 60's on a Sony A7II I am happy to announce the launch of a new web-serie about lens test " The Weird Lens Challenge "... but not any kind of lens, we will focus only on the weird ones , the old, the crazy ones that you can mount on a mirrorless camera.
For this 5th episode we will hack an Helios 44-2 lens to get customized bokeh on Sony A7II
First you need to open the back part of the lens, unscrew it and see what size is the diaphragm, then create some cool shapes on thin black cardboard, and put one inside the lens over the diaphragm.
Screw back the back part and you are ready to shoot.
The Lens is sharp as hell, and famous for it's swirly bokeh the shapes you create on paper , give a incredible look at your shots, this modification will give a pretty rare look for a cinematic project.
this Lens not rare, but i was lucky to find it only for 5 euros.

I am happy to announce the launch of a new web-serie about lens test " The Weird Lens Challenge "... but not any kind of lens, we will focus only on the weird ones , the old, the crazy ones that you can mount on a mirrorless camera.
For this 4th episode we will shoot a video with a 180° fish eye from the end of 60's on a Sony A7II
For this episode we will test a lens fish eye adapter : the Kenko 180° fisheye
The lens was first screwd to a 55mm to 52mm filter then to the filer of a Canon 50mm 1.4 FD to a Nex Adapter to the Sony A7II
The 50mm focal length is perfect for having a full frame Fisheye circular image ... on a APSC it would not be circular.
The Lens is not sharp as hell, but it's pretty good coupled with a sharp lens like the Canon FD, it's also give a incredible look at your shots, of course the use of a Circular video is pretty rare for a cinematic project, but for time lapses it give an impressive effect.
this Lens is pretty rare, but i was lucky to find it only for 60 euros.

Previously on the " The Weird Lens Challenge " we saw how to get Bokeh Madness on Video
I am happy to announce the launch of a new web-serie about lens test " The Weird Lens Challenge "... but not any kind of lens, we will focus only on the weird ones , the old, the crazy ones that you can mount on a mirrorless camera.
For this 3rd episode we will test to shoot a video with a Photax camera lens from the 50'S on a Sony A7II
And answer to the question : How to get Bokeh Madness on video.
This episode was shot on a rainy dark day, so before everyone gets crazy, the ISO where very high, as the light was low and the camera is also very dark.
For this episode we will test a 1950 french plastic camera : the Photax Heanar type V.
After i managed to open and separate the front and the back of the camera, i blocked the shutter and then i just had to plug the camera directly on the A7II sensor, it was fitting perfectly.
The Lens is not sharp or great, or even easy to use, but it's pretty cool looking and gives a certain vintage look to your shots. After all the results on a bright day could be really great, but ... yea it's winter !

Previously on the " The Weird Lens Challenge " we tested a 1910 lens on a Mirrorless camera.
I am happy to announce the launch of a new web-serie about lens test " The Weird Lens Challenge "... but not any kind of lens, we will focus only on the weird ones , the old, the crazy ones that you can mount on a mirrorless camera.
For this second episode we will test the famous Sovietic Jupiter-9 Bokeh Monster 85mm/2 lens mixed with a M42 tilt Ring to Nex adapter on a Sony A7II
And answer to the question : How to get Bokeh Madness on video.
The Jupiter - 9 is famous for being a Bokeh Monster, it has the same swirly effect as the Helios Lenses but even stronger, being very close the the Petzval lens.
Then the lens was screwed to a M42 to Tilt Nex Adaptor ring then to the Sony A7II
Mixing a tilt ring who makes weird bokeh on any lens with a bokeh Monster will get you some amazing results.
Check the video for the results.

After mounting it with a cardboard piece to keep it tightly blocked in a m42 macro tube, and then screw it on a m42 bellows, the lens was able to focus.
Then the Bellow was screwed to a M42 to Nex Adaptor ring then to the Sony A7II
The Lens is incredibly sharp for a 105 years old lady ... but it also gives some strange lens flares and light leaks that are pretty dreamy ( some would say it's horrible )

I spent 2 weeks with my girlfriend in the Azores islands ( Pico, Sao Miguel, Sao Jorge) The Azores Islands are a small archipelago of nine islands off the coast of Portugal. Verdant and lush, the Azores offer many beautiful sites to see and interesting places to visit like the sapphire blue and emerald green lakes, fertile prairies, volcanic cones and craters, colorful hydrangeas and azaleas, 15th century churches, and majestic manor houses. We went there to walk, discover volcano caves and see whales ... sadly , i didn't saw any whales but i saw dolphins and flying fishes. This islands are so beautiful, so wild and so unique in the world, it was a wonderfull experience and 2 weeks was definitely not enough to see all. This video is a way to give you a short view on what you could see in the Azores islands.
It was shot with a Sony A7II and 35mm zeiss Lens color-graded in premiere cc with Impulz puts stabilized with a Beholder MS1 3 Axes Gimbal
Thanks to Sony France for their support and to My Girlfriend Mariel for her patience when i was shooting behind her like a spy.
